First Words: For Writers and Babies
FIRST WORDS: FOR WRITERS AND BABIES
New session now booking on Tues 24 June!
Who: FIRST WORDS is a group for writers in the first year of parenthood.
When: Tuesday 24 June, 12-2pm
Where: The Site at The Royal Court Theatre.
What: FIRST WORDS is a group for writers in the first year of parenthood. It is not a formal writers’ group. It is also not a creche. It is a chance for writers with babies under the age of one to meet each other – to build community in what can be an isolating experience, and to be seen not just as parents, but as writers too. There will be free tea and coffee. There will be (basic) soft play. There will – we hope – be other people who have some shared understanding of what this stage of life is like. There will be no expectation to write a single word. The session will be facilitated by Royal Court Associate Playwright, Nina Segal.
FIRST WORDS is not about writing – it’s about recognising that you are a writer, even if you don’t write anything, for months or years. The Royal Court’s aim is to be a home for all writers – FIRST WORDS is a home for writers’ babies too.
Cost: Free, and there will be free tea and coffee – however, spaces are limited. Please also let us know if you change your mind and won’t be able to make it.
FAQS:
Do I have to be there at 12pm?
No. We know that getting somewhere for a specific time with a small baby can be difficult – so feel free to arrive any time throughout the session. Just know that the session does officially end at 2pm.
Do you have a changing mat?
Yes. We also have nappies and baby wipes.
Do you have somewhere to park a buggy?
Yes.
Do you have a professional childminder who can hold my baby while I make a two-hour Zoom call in a separate room?
No, sorry – we need all parents to remain responsible for their babies at all times. But if you want to hold each others’ babies, that’s between you guys.
Is this group just open to mothers?
No, of course not. This group is open to any parents with babies under one. It doesn’t have to be your first baby. And if your baby is slightly older than one, but you still want to attend – get in touch. We’ll see what we can do.
Is this group just open to professionally-produced writers?
No, of course not. This group is open to anyone who considers themselves a writer. If you’re not someone who would consider themselves a writer, but you still want to attend – get in touch. We’ll see what we can do.
I have another question that you haven’t answered – should I get in touch?
