Diana Nneka Atuona wins the Alfred Fagon Audience Award for Liberian Girl

Liberian Girl by Diana Nneka Atuona won the inaugural Audience Award at the Alfred Fagon Awards 2015 on 27 Nov. The play was directed by Matthew Dunster and staged at the Royal Court 7 Jan – 31 Jan 2015.

Between 1989 and 2003 the Civil War in Liberia saw over 200,000 people killed, a million others displaced into refugee camps, and over 15,000 children recruited into ‘Small Boys Units’. Liberian Girl tells one teenage girl’s story of survival in this intimate and immersive production.

First-time writer Diana Nneka Atuona’s play had previously won the Alfred Fagon Award Best New Play of the Year in 2013.

Diana Nneka Atuona attended the Royal Court’s Peckham Writers Group, as part of Theatre Local – the Royal Court’s project to take plays to alternative spaces, sponsored by Bloomberg.

The Alfred Fagon Award recognizes and celebrates the depth of talented Black British playwrights of Caribbean and African descent writing in Britain today. The Audience Award is voted by the public in an online poll and awarded to the top three plays.
