Playwright @ Your Table was a uniquely intimate and insightful experience. There was a sense of anticipation and excitement similar to waiting for the curtain to go up on a show, whilst we waited for our writer to arrive, sitting in the International cubby hole in the Open Plan Office. I was lucky enough to have Caryl Churchill and she read her own play, Far Away. Hearing the writer voice the characters as she had imagined them when writing felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience and an exciting way to hear and understand a play for the first time. Plays are often left open to interpretation by the creative teams, directors and actors involved in staging them, so to hear the writer read the play felt as close to the actual process of writing and imagining that you can come – without being inside the writer’s head!
There was a sense of shared intimacy amongst the group and everyone left feeling that we had experienced something precious and unforgettable.
